                                                          Abstract

Indonesian romances were produced from the Pujangga Lama era to Balai Pustaka. A famous
romance from Minangkabau was Sabai Nan Aluih (1964). Sabai's character was later resurrected in the
form of a popular novel with the title Senandung Sabai (2015). These two literary masterpieces are being
compared regarding the image of a woman named Sabai. This article used qualitative methods with the
technique of describing Sabai's image in both literary works. To analyze Sabai's image, Sugihastuti's (2000)
feminist criticism theory of women's image is used. The technique used is by reading and sorting and then
analyzing the parts that contain images of women.
The results of the study revealed that first, the two literary works both use Sabai's name as the character's
name. Second, the resulting works differ in time and language; Sabai Nan Aluih was printed in 1964 using
the Minangkabau language, while Senandung Sabai was printed in 2015 using the Indonesian language.
Third, Sabai's character was portrayed as a brave woman to take decisions.
