According to Larsen, 2009, ritualization is a fact of social life and can only be fully
understood when viewed in relation to broader cosmological understandings, such as the reality
of spirits and their effects on people's lives and relationships. Women and men of varying ages
and spirits take part in these rituals out of a desire to improve their lives and ensure prosperity
and contentment for themselves and their families. As a result, they are not participating as
artists with the intention of reinterpreting reality or comprehending life in terms of itself.
