ABSTRACT

The mosque is a major institution for Muslims. The role of the mosque is not only focused as a
center of worship alone, but also includes many important roles such as education centers, propagation
of Da'wah, as well as social services to Muslims and the community as a whole. The objective of this study
is to assess the performance of mosques in carrying out their functions and roles based on the standard
assessment instrument of Masjid Malaysia rating (SPMM). The study involved all 48 mosques in the district
of Tumpat. This study uses a quantitative method in which the data collected through field studies using
scoring instrument SPMM. A descriptive statistical analysis is carried out on the basis of these data. The
results of the study found that most of the mosques in the Tumpat are still at a moderate and weak level.
Only four mosques received a four-star rating, 26 mosques received three stars and 15 mosques received
two stars and three mosques received only one star. There is none of them receive a five-stars. This study
also found that the locality of the mosque is not the main factor that affects the effectiveness of the
implementation of the functions of a mosque but the ability of officials and members of the mosque in
administer, plan and implement programs is the biggest factor that determines the effectiveness of the
implementation of the functions of a mosque.

Pendahuluan

Kepentingan institusi masjid tidak dapat dipertikaikan. Sejarah telah membuktikan bahawa
Rasulullah ketika mula tiba di Madinah telah membina masjid apabila Nabi S.A.W. membina Masjid Quba’
setelah baginda tiba di Quba’. Demikian juga, Baginda telah membina Masjid Nabawi setelah Baginda tiba
di Bandar Madinah (Norani, Abdullah, 2020).

Di era moden ini, masjid terus menjadi institusi penting umat Islam bukan sahaja di negara majoriti
umat Islam, malah di negara yang umat Islam adalah minoriti, institusi masjid masih memainkan peranan
yang utama. Contohnya di negara Singapura, Institusi masjid masa kini semakin menjadi tumpuan
masyarakat Melayu-Islam Singapura dalam menjalankan pelbagai aktiviti bukan hanya setakat aktiviti
ibadah seperti bersolat, mengaji al-Qur’an dan berceramah. Bahkan institusi ini turut menjadi tempat
untuk masyarakat Melayu-Islam menjalankan aktiviti sosial seperti pembangunan ummah, pembelajaran,
riadah dan perbincangan. (Ezad Azraai Jamsari, Siti Noorasikin Tumiran, et.al, 2010)

Al-Quran secara jelas memberikan isyarat tentang peranan institusi masjid sebagaimana
firman Allah S.W.T. yang bermaksud:

“Nur hidayah petunjuk Allah itu bersinar dengan nyatanya terutama sekali di rumah rumah ibadat yang
diperintahkan oleh Allah supaya dimuliakan keadaannya dan disebut serta diperingat nama Allah padanya;
di situ juga dikerjakan ibadat mensuci dan memuji Allah pada waktu pagi dan petang. Ibadah dikerjakan
oleh orang yang kuat imannya, yang tidak dilalaikan oleh perniagaan atau berjual beli daripada menyebut
serta mengingati Allah dan mendirikan solat serta mengeluarkan zakat, mereka takut hari kiamat yang
padanya berbalik balik hati dan pandangan” (Quran 24:36)
