“Kerjan”

The terms "Kerjan," "Kerojan," or "Kerajaan" are commonly used to refer to the governing
body of a society. The culminating event of this governmental process is the "Kerjan" ceremony,
which signifies the selection of a new leader by Adat Comittee. This celebration is observed across
numerous continents and typically includes traditional customs, such as dancing, Silat

performances, and an inaugural speech from the newly appointed leader.
The Istiadat Kerjan is a mandatory ceremony for the inauguration of a new Dato Penghulu Luak
or Dato Lembaga in Negeri Sembilan. The Istiadat Adat Committee of the Dato-Dato Lembaga,
consisting of Dato Paduka Tuan, Dato Shahbandar, Buapak, and Soko, will come to a consensus to
determine a suitable date for conducting this ceremony at the Balai Penghulu Luka. (JKKNS, 2019)
Those who need to attend on the day of the declaration are the Supervisor of the Istana Besar
Seri Menanti Negeri Sembilan as the representative of His Royal Highness the Yang di-Pertuan
Besar Negeri Sembilan, District Officers, District Religious Officers, District Police Chiefs, and
government officials as government representatives, as well as appointed attendants.
The performance being showcased in Tanjong's theater appears to be authentic, as demonstrated
by the presentation by KTANS. During the concluding address, Dato Penghulu Luak highlighted

the significance of adhering to cultural traditions as a means of sustaining one's way of life.
