LITERATURE REVIEW
About “Tanjong”
The narrative of Tanjong unfolds within the geographical confines of the Luak Tanjong area
in the state of Negeri Sembilan. This narrative encapsulates themes of romance, emotional
turmoil, conflicts for authority, interpersonal bonds, and the cultural practises prevalent in the
region of Negeri Sembilan. The conflict starts when the relationship between Baroq and Anjang
is fortified by the camaraderie shared between their fathers and the affectionate connection
between Baroq's younger sister, Tanjong, and Anjang. During the conflict between the Bugis and
Dutch forces, Baroq's father, who held the position of Tok Pedano (local chief), unfortunately,
passed away while en route to Pagaruyung in order to seek aid. This unfortunate event serves as
a crucial test of the goodwill between the Bugis and the Dutch. Consequently, a void in leadership
emerges within the region.
In accordance with the adat perpatih, a customary practice observed in the state of Negeri
Sembilan, it is stipulated that the leadership role ought to be subject to rotation rather than being
passed down through inheritance. However, the assertion made by Baroq to assume leadership
in the Tanjong region resulted in a violent conflict.
Tanjong theater is an informative platform that sheds light on the leadership structure in
Adat Pepatih. Adat Pepatih is a customary law system practised in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. The
framework of the Tanjong theater emphasizes the importance of selecting competent leaders and
the possible consequences of not understanding the selection process. Through this platform, the
audience learns about the intricacies of the Adat Pepatih system, such as the role of men in
leadership and the significance of family lineage. Overall, the Tanjong theater serves as a valuable
educational tool that promotes the understanding of traditional leadership systems in Malaysia.
