Artistic Elements in Malaysian Theatre
A theatre performance is an action show that is exhibited in the same space and performed in
front of an audience. Actions or selected scenes are played to bring a unique story to be developed and
presented to the audience. However, acting and characterization are also assisted with some stage
elements as a supporter for the delivery of information in a more unique, subjective, plot-based, creative
and clear method to the audience. The intended stage element consists of an artistic part which is broken
down into several main parts. The artistic elements of the stage are among the main elements that help
in providing information about the background of the place, the background of the time, the situation and
the decoration which helps an action played. Artistic elements become the main factor in developing the
corner of the stage room decoration with more creativity and innovation from the aspect of visual art and
the concept of stage art. Artistic elements are divided into four main components including sets and props,
lighting arrangements, audio and sound as well as costumes and make-up, each of which has its own role
and importance in the performance design. These artistic elements play an important role in conveying
the story and creating a unique experience for the audience. Set refers to the background and physical
structure of the set built on the stage to create the environment and location of the story. A creative set
can bring the audience deeper into the world of the story. Props are small objects used by actors in the
show. They help bring the action to life and give a real element to the story. For example, table decorations,
fake weapons, or important letters in the story. Stage lighting is a very important element that can create
atmosphere, highlight important actors or objects, and create dramatic effects. Wisely chosen lighting can
affect the audience's feelings and understanding of the story. Sound is an often overlooked but important
element in theatre. Music components, sound effects, and clear dialogue can strengthen emotions and
help in the story. The effective use of sound can create tension, excitement, or calmness according to the
events of the story. Costumes and makeup help shape the character and create a visual identity for the
actor. They can also reflect the time and place of the story. Creativity in costume and make-up can enrich
