seating arrangement for this show is in a staggered seating in a straight row. Since this is a hall, the
organizer can choose the best arrangement for the show. The straight row has a longer viewing distance
but whether it is staggered or not, the viewing distance is not affected (Ahmed & Islam, 2004).
In this show, the performance structure is a chronological cultural performance. The show’s
storyline follows a typical beginning, middle and ending plot. The show begins with a calm state of the
Malaysian rainforest which is perfectly depicted through the setting of the stage. Although the setting of
the stage is fixed, with the help of visual presentation, it allows the audience to immerse in the show.
This is also useful tool to be used when there is no dialog in the show. Apart from dances, the
performance is also equipped with gymnastic and magic show. This elevates the performance outside of
the typical chronological performance. They creatively used different elements to ensure the storyline is
thoroughly illustrated. This is also possible due to the proper stage design in ensuring the performer’s
safety whenever they wanted to do the mid-air somersault. It would not be possible if the stage is too
cramped.
4.3. The relationship auditorium design and performance structure (Encore Malacca and Putrajaya
Rainforest Show) with Sarawak Cultural Village
In these three variations of auditorium, the relationship between auditorium design and
performance structure are analysed. There are five aspects of auditorium design and cultural
performance that will be discussed, which are auditorium size, the amount of exit or entrance, audience
to stage distance, seating area and technology. When it comes to size, it plays a significant role in
determining the scale of performance that can be done. Auditorium size will directly affect the cultural
performance structure. This also include how spacious and fitting the stage is to incorporate all the
elements in a show. The auditorium size in SCV is smaller compared to Encore Malacca auditorium and
Rainforest Fantasy Hall. Since the size of SCV auditorium is fixed, the cultural performance in SCV seems a
bit lacking compared to the cultural performance at Encore Malacca and Rainforest Fantasy Putrajaya. By
comparing the size, Encore Malacca has a massive auditorium that is fully equipped with technological
tools. Although it is a fixed auditorium, the rotating platform creates a bigger impact for the audience
when enjoying the show. Meanwhile, Rainforest Fantasy Putrajaya is not fixed, and the organizers have
flexibility to change the size whenever necessary. Especially the stage, the bigger the stage, the more can
be done in terms of props and visuals. Andrew (2015) stated that space is essential in satisfying “the
physical and mental needs of performers and audiences”. Meiss believed that every space has its own
need (as cited in Andrew, 2015).
The entrance and exit of an auditorium are also one of the key features that need to be
considered. The amount of exit and entrance available will determine the overall cultural performance
structure. This is not necessary for the audience only, but also the performers themselves, especially
when they are at the backstage. The entrances and exits should be strategically placed. Andrew (2015)
noted that the entrance and exit for audiences should be convenient with the size of the auditorium. This
may not be for all the auditorium discussed. As for the entrance and exit for the performers, there should
be enough space for the performers to move in and out during the performance, especially when they
wanted to go backstage for any costumes change. Backstage consists of many booths which may be a
problem for the performers if the changing room is a little too far from the stage (Andrew, 2015). Apart
from that, the more entrances and exits on stage, the more dynamic the show would be. Entering or
