Table 8 shows the position of imparting local wisdom (morals and values) in reasons for playing
traditional and modern Malay children’s songs, and non-Malay children’s songs by income group. The table
shows that for traditional Malay songs, the total mentions of use for morals and values comes fifth after
emotional appeals, education, language skills, and availability of the songs. For modern Malay songs, the
use of the songs for morals and values comes second after emotional appeals. Morals and values are the
least mentioned purpose of using non-Malay children’s songs.

Looking at groups of income, Table 8 shows that only 5 out of 43 mentions from RM 1 000-5 000, 2
out of 29 mentions from RM 6 000-10 000, 1 out of 16 mentions from RM 11 000-15 000 and none from
over RM 15 000 mentions that traditional Malay songs are used to impart morals and values. In total, only
8 mentions are seen for the use of children’s songs to impart morals and values with the largest number
coming from the income group of RM 1000- 5 000. For modern Malay children’s songs, 11 out of 47
mentions are from RM 1 000-5 000, 3 out of 28 mentions are from RM 6 000-10 000, 5 out of 18 mentions
are from RM 11 000-15 000 and none is from over RM 15 000 that says traditional Malay songs are used
to impart morals and values. In total, there is an increase of 19 mentions for the use of modern Malay
children’s songs to impart morals and values with most of the mentions being from the RM 1 000-5 000
