Table 7 presents the positions of imparting local wisdom (morals and values) in reasons for playing
traditional and modern Malay children’s songs, and non-Malay children’s songs by level of education. The
findings show that the total mentions of use for morals and values come forth after emotional appeals,
education, and language skills. For modern Malay songs, the use of morals and values comes second after
emotional appeals. Morals and values are the least mentioned purpose of using non-Malay children’s
songs.
To explain in detail, it can be seen from the table that only 3 out of 17 mentions from SPM/STPM
leavers, 1 out of 14 mentions from diploma holders, 2 out of 39 mentions from degree holders, and 2 out
of 17 mentions from Master’s holders that traditional Malay songs are used to impart morals and values.
In total, only 8 mentions are seen for the use of children’s songs to impart morals and values with the
largest number coming from SPM/STPM. For modern Malay children’s songs, 3 out of 19 mentions from
SPM/STPM leavers, 2 out of 16 mentions from diploma holders, 9 out of 40 mentions from degree holders,
and 5 out of 17 mentions from Master’s holders that modern Malay songs are used to impart morals and
values. In total, there is an increase of 19 mentions for the use of modern Malay children’s songs to impart
morals and values with most of the mentions being from the degree holders. In the case of non-Malay
songs, only 2 mentions from the 40 mentions from the degree holders can be seen. No statements were
found from other respondents from other groups of education levels that they used non-Malay songs to
International Conference on Local Wisdom of the Malay Archipelago (COLLEGA 2023) Page - 640 -
