EXPLICATING THE ELEMENTS OF THINKING AND CREATIVITY OF PANTUN IN THE SOCIAL MEDIA SITE OF
DEWAN BAHASA DAN PUSTAKA, MALAYSIA (THE INSTITUTE OF LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE OF
MALAYSIA)
ABSTRACT
Pantun are non-material artifacts with various functions and meanings in Malay culture. It has a
special position in the sustainability of the heritage of traditional literature in the Malay Archipelago. If
other classical Malay literary genres seem to be marginalized from the public's attention, this is not the
case for pantun. It is lifted and used in public and private contexts, official or unofficial. Scholars have
agreed to acknowledged the genre of pantun as the original creation of the Malays and not imported from
foreign sources such as India, China and Java. Pantun shows the solidity of creativity and thinking of the
Malays. Orientalists and traditional literary researchers have conducted field and text research to explore
and understand the Malay mind as reflected by the use of allusions and meanings that not only have
aesthetic value, but become a strategic combination of oral and written communication. This paper aims
to analyse the pantuns in the regular posting on the Facebook official page and the Telegram mobile
application owned by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Malaysia. The study employed text analysis and content
analysis to show descriptively the elements of thought and creativity of poems in sample poems posted
on its social media sites and mobile application. The study was partially guided by the theory of
Pengkaedahan Melayu, the idea of Hashim Awang, with the main objective of showing elements of local
wisdom in the creation of pantun. The findings of the study showed the dynamics of old pantun’s content
that reveals thinking and creativity in the perspective of strategic communication through pantun as a
legacy of superior local wisdom.

Pengenalan
Pantun adalah warisan kebudayaan di Kepulauan Melayu yang diperakui sebagai ciptaan asal
orang Melayu yang paling asli berbanding genre sastera Melayu klasik yang lain (Zaaba, 2000: 672). Malah
pantun juga mendapat pengiktirafan sebagai Warisan Budaya Tidak Ketara oleh Pertubuhan Pendidikan,
Saintifik dan Kebudayaan Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu (UNESCO), sejak 2020 (Hafizah, 2023).
Menurut Mohd Taib Osman (dalam Wan Abd Kadir Wan Yusuf, 1996:1), pantun adalah satu artifak bukan
benda atau non-material artifact yang mempunyai berbagai-bagai makna dan fungsi dalam budayanya.
Pantun terbentuk dalam tradisi lisan yang mementingkan ungkapan berirama yang bukan hanya sedap
didengar tetapi mempunyai nilai estetika dan pemikiran jika dikupas secara ilmiah.
Dapatan sejarah telah membuktikan bahawa masyarakat di Kepulauan Melayu telah mencipta
peribahasa dan mantera terutamanya bagi memenuhi tujuan penyembuhan sakit, dan pantun juga adalah
antara bentuk prosa paling awal dicipta bagi memenuhi pelbagai tujuan yang lain. Menurut kajian
Muhammad Haji Salleh (2018: 1-3), pantun wujud dalam kalangan masyarakat di seluruh Kepulauan
Melayu, tidak hanya tertumpu di Semenanjung Tanah Melayu tetapi secara khususnya bermula dari titik
atas negeri Acheh di Kepulauan Sumatera yang membawa formatnya ke pulau Jawa dan tersebar meluas
pula ke Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara Timur dan Papua. Pada bahagian utara Asia Tenggara, pantun
diungkapkan oleh bangsa Melayu yang mendiami Kampuchea dan turut dikesan di bahagian tengah
