ABSTRACT

Patani Malays are one of the races located in the South of Thailand that have and practice Malay
culture in their daily lives. Malay Patani's life is one with nature because the residential areas are almost

all surrounded by green forests and beaches, so almost all of their activities are closely related to nature
as the words in proverbs highlight elements of nature such as animals and others. The creation of

proverbs is closely tied to old Malay customs to the point of creating a culture. This study aims to identify
the functions of Patani Malay proverbs and analyze local values in Patani Malay culture. This qualitative

study was conducted by applying the sociological theory of literature that focuses on the function and
value contained in Malay Patani proverbs. This study found that Malay Patani proverbs create a lot of

proverbs by exhibiting the functions of advice, satire and rebuke. While the value found in the Patani
Malay proverb is the value of hard work and never giving up. In addition, it was also found the value of

patience and perseverance, the value of family and togetherness, the value of being exemplary, the value
of sincerity and the value of peace.
