Introduction
Instructional television has evolved over the past few decades. In the early days an instructor
spoke live or via videotape to a national audience. Students could receive the lecture/class at home and
ask questions on the local level to a facilitator, usually a community college instructor. This approach was
one-way video and one-way audio, since the student seldom if ever had contact with the real instructor.
This approach is still around till now. Instructional television makes higher education accessible to people
who might otherwise not have the opportunity. It also helps learners financially and socially, often saving
hours of driving and the associated expenses.
On June 19, 1972, educational television for schools was introduced in Peninsular Malaysia by
Y.A.B. Tun Haji Abdul Razak bin Dato’ Hussein, then Prime Minister. This introduction marked the beginning
of educational television in our country, which has since become an integral part of our education system.
Educational television is one of the educational development projects for primary and secondary schools
focusing on subjects such as civics, language, science and mathematics. Today, the Education TV Service
reaches 215 elementary schools and 265 secondary schools. Sabah and Sarawak were not originally
included in the Education TV Service project because the national broadcasting system had not been
extended to these states at that time.
DidikTV KPM is an instructional television channel through a Malaysian educational television
network owned, produced and operated by a joint venture between the Education Technology Division of
the Ministry of Education Malaysia and Media Prima Berhad. The content of DidikTV includes aspects of
