Table 4 shows that seven themes were observed from the responses given on why traditional
Malay songs, Modern Malay songs, and non-Malay songs were played or not played. For traditional Malay
songs, the reasons given were identified to be language skills, educational, emotional appeals, morals and
values, cognitive skills, communication skills, and availability of the songs themselves. Similar themes were
discovered but with no availability issues for Modern Malay songs. Availability issues and communication
skills were not mentioned to be the reasons for playing or not playing non-Malay children’s songs. Few
unclear reasons or no reasons given were also found when the data were analysed.
