Research Methodology

This research adopted qualitative approach over a phenomenological value reflecting one’s
personal experience that requires a description or interpretation of meanings from specific occurrence
(Gadamer, 1998; Padilla-Diaz, 2015). The hermeneutic or dialectic by the informants will reflect the
investigation of research inquiries. The data inquiry strategy was conducted over in-depth interview
through semi-structured questions integrated with the probing techniques projecting informants’
understanding on their experiences, perceptions, knowledge, and feelings (Roesenthal, 2016). This study
was involved about 11 informants, and they were interviewed accordingly by using the snowball sampling
technique (DeJonckheere and Vaughn, 2019) to ascertain specific criteria involving the Javanese women
who married to French locals who lived in Parisienne and familiar with Javanese culture; Macak-Manak-
Masak. This method was reliable to address the research objectives and all themes derived were analysed
by using Constant Comparative Analysis (CCA) and thematic arrangement juxtaposed via the researcher’s
interpretation (Guest, Namey & Mitchell, 2013).

Background of the Informants

A total of 11 Javanese women ranging from 35 years to 57 years old who are married to French
locals within the period of 1 to 23 years. From 11 informants interviewed, the researcher was learnt seven
of them were single and four informants were widowed. Most of the informants met their French spouses
for the first time at work and in several countries including Indonesia, Hong Kong, and France, and there
were also informants met each other at social gatherings, or when they were in colleges.
