Introduction
A theatrical touring production, sometimes known as a "touring show" or "touring production," is
a style of theatrical performance that involves traveling to different sites, cities, or venues, as opposed to
being staged only in a permanent theatre setting. The purpose of these productions is to facilitate the
dissemination of live theatrical experiences to diverse audiences across various geographical areas. The
productions can include a broad spectrum of artistic genres, such as plays, musicals, dance performances,
and other related forms of artistic expression. Once of the important artistic elements in touring the
theatrical production is set design. According to Brako and Gilbert (2022), scenic design or set design are
expressions used interchangeably to mean the creation of scenery backgrounds for theatre, film and
television. Scenic design in theatre, film and television are practically similar in approach and shares the
same qualities….the scenic design for every performance or production needs to depict the appropriate
atmosphere to an audience. (p.83). The theatre play titled Kopiah Putih & Gincu (2019) embarked on a
journey from Kuala Lumpur to Surakarta, commonly referred to as Solo, a city renowned for its historical
significance as the former royal capital in the southern central part of Java, Indonesia. The primary goals
of this theatrical endeavor is to address the existing deficiency in comprehensive understanding of
production design, technical aspects, and creative management processes within the realm of theatre.
The production of theatrical performances is sometimes accompanied by various constraints, including
limitations in terms of cost, time, space, and the availability of a production team or human resources.
Therefore, The primary aim of this research project is to integrate the interrelationships among elements
of mobility and flexibility in the context of set design for touring plays. These elements encompass notions
such as ideas, space, time, cost, and human resources, which combine to create a scenography ecosystem.
This study also aims to ascertain the defining attributes of set mobility and adaptation in the context of
traveling theatre plays. Specifically, to utilise of mobility and flexibility techniques in the realm of set
design for traveling performances.
The Theatre Scenography and Set Design Process
Scenography is the art or craft of designing and producing theatrical scenery. Scenography,
according to Pamela Howard (2002), is a comprehensive method of creating theatre from a visual
standpoint such as set, lighting, sound, costume and make-up design. It is described as "the seamless
synthesis of space, text, research, art, actors, directors, and spectators that contributes to an original
creation" (p. 130). Hence, the practice of scenography is one that is confined to a certain period of time
and specific process. As states by Pantaouvaki (2010, p.70), when designing a theatrical set, some key
considerations include the overall concept and vision for the production, the practical requirements of the
performance space, the needs of the performers and their movements on stage, the use of color and
texture, and the role of lighting in enhancing the visual impact of the design. Pantaouvaki also explained
that the designer must consider the relationship between the design and the audience, as well as the
historical and cultural context of the play (p. 70). The process of theatre design encompasses a range of
methodological considerations.
The creative process begins with conceptualization, where the director and designer collaborate
on ideas. They analyze the play's text and director's viewpoint, ensuring the designer understands their
goals. This understanding allows for a unified and precise portrayal of the intended aesthetic for the
theatrical production (Zaure & Pyokpung, 2023, p.9). The incorporation of theatre and performing arts
into spatial design extends beyond the confines of the stage, encompassing several factors and process
