governance systems influence decisions about community engagement, how resource units fit with
institutional missions, and how resource systems affect sustainable practices.

Eco-Pesantren Initiatives and Their Relationship to the SES Framework
In recent times, the concept of eco-pesantren, which emerged from the fusion of Islamic
education and environmental sustainability, has attracted a lot of interest. The goal of these distinctive
Indonesian educational institutions is to promote environmental stewardship within their communities by
fusing Islamic teachings with ecological awareness. The Social-Ecological Systems (SES) Framework has
been adopted, and this offers a crucial perspective for comprehending the dynamics of eco-pesantren
activities. Scholars have pointed out that eco-pesantren projects represent a fusion of sustainability and
spirituality (Kusumawati, 2018; Zain, 2019). These organizations understand the importance of protecting
the environment and the Quran's stewardship (khalifah) ethic. They actively engage in sustainable
measures like responsible land management, waste reduction, and energy efficiency. Eco-pesantren place
a high priority on environmental education (Asyhari et al., 2020), fostering ecological awareness in their
kids and highlighting how all living things are interconnected.

Institutions that practice eco-pesantren rely on resource systems that include their natural
surrounds, including ecosystems, water, and land. Local communities are resource consumers in addition
to students and professors, demonstrating the connection between the institution and its surroundings
(Budidarsono et al., 2017). The SES Framework offers a lens through which to examine interactions
between resource systems and users in the context of eco-pesantren.

According to Asyhari et al. (2020), governance systems are frequently developed by eco-pesantren
institutions and are based on Islamic ideals and community involvement. The SES Framework helps assess
how various governance structures influence the choice of sustainability practices. It emphasizes how
crucial institutional structures, guidelines, and norms are for fostering ecological consciousness and
efficient resource management. The SES Framework's resource units serve as a representation of a social-
ecological system's desired goals. These units for eco-pesantren include environmental sustainability as
well as spiritual growth, cultural preservation, and social well-being (Kusumawati, 2018). Researchers can
examine how eco-pesantren institutions identify, prioritize, and attain these diverse resource units using
               the SES Framework.

               Methodology
This investigation on the community engagement and sustainability practices of three Pesantren

institutions in Indonesia used a qualitative research design and a case study technique. Case studies
provide an in-depth examination of certain occurrences in their actual environments, enabling a thorough
               grasp of the topic.

               Selection of Pesantren Institutions
In order to ensure diversity in terms of geographic location, environmental setting, and legacy of

culture, the Pesantren institutions chosen for this study were deliberately determined. Each of the
selected institutions have special qualities that set them apart and make them valuable for the research.
The following Pesantren organizations were chosen based on:
