qualitative nature of the research limits the generalizability of findings beyond the selected cases. Despite
these limitations, the study provides valuable insights into the community engagement and sustainability
practices of the selected Pesantren institutions.
Findings
The findings of the research indicate some intriguing variations across the three Pesantren institutions—
Maghfirah, Isy Karima, and Merapi Merbabu—in terms of their construction techniques, sustainability
strategies, and community participation strategies. An examination of these results is as below:
Table 1 - Common Theme: Community Engagement and Sustainability:
No.1 Pesantren The remote location of Maghfirah Pesantren in Bogor and its purchase
Maghfirah, of land from locals show direct interaction with the neighborhood.
(Bogor) Although the second phase of building switched to red brick, the
original phase of construction adhered to sustainable standards by
using local bamboo and skilled artisans. The creative application of the
waqf principle in mosque construction demonstrates the fusion of
conventional and contemporary sustainability approaches. This
strategy could serve as an example for fusing regional resources with
modern sustainability techniques.
No. 2 Pesantren Isy In contrast to Maghfirah, Isy Karima uses contemporary brick and
Karima (Solo) cement construction methods, demonstrating a different approach to
infrastructure development. However, their sustainable restaurant
project, Resto Sawah, reveals a dedication to neighborhood
involvement and the use of regional resources. Training local talent to
run the restaurant benefits both the institution and the development
of local capabilities. Creating a resort out of rattan and bamboo is
another example of a sustainable building technique. In terms of
economic sustainability, Isy Karima stands out due to its emphasis on
commercial endeavors as a way to assist the Pesantren and the
community.
No. 3 Pesantren Merapi Merbabu uses a modern architectural style and adds a coffee
Merapi shop to it as an entrepreneurial supplement. Through this project,
Merbabu locals can get jobs while also introducing students to business. This
interaction with the community through business endeavors
exemplifies a distinctive route to community involvement. Although
traditional sustainability techniques may not have been emphasized
during building construction, the coffee shop will have a huge impact
on local livelihoods.
All three Pesantren institutions share a common theme of community engagement and
sustainability, despite variations in building materials and design. Each Pesantren understands the value
of making a contribution to the local community's well-being, whether through the use of regional
resources, entrepreneurial endeavors, or capacity-building programs. The Social-Ecological Systems (SES)
Framework's fundamental principles, which emphasize the interdependence of societies and their
ecosystems, are in line with this.
