neighbourhood (Aziz, 2017). Initiatives for sustainability and community development are undertaken by
several Tahfiz institutions in addition to providing religious instruction. Projects aimed at reducing poverty,
promoting education, and preserving the environment might all fall under this category (Hashim et al.,
2019). Tahfiz institutions excel in engaging the community, but they also face obstacles like limited
resources and the need to be flexible in the face of shifting social contexts (Osman & Khair, 2021).

Application of the Social-Ecological Systems (SES) Framework in Pesantren Research

In recent years, the idea of sustainable development has drawn more and more attention in the
context of religious educational institutions like Pesantren in Indonesia. A thorough analytical framework
is clearly required as these organizations attempt to strike a delicate balance between spiritual teaching,
community involvement, and environmental sustainability. The Social-Ecological Systems (SES)
Framework, which offers a comprehensive perspective on the interactions between human societies and
their surrounding ecosystems, is one such framework that shows potential for this environment. In this
research study, the SES Framework is applied to comprehend and analyze the complex dynamics of
               Indonesia's Pesantren institutions.

               Resource Systems and Resource Users
The SES Framework, which was first created by Elinor Ostrom and her associates (Ostrom, 2009),
provides a methodical way to look at the intricate connections between social and ecological systems. It
is especially useful in situations where human activities have a large negative impact on the environment
and vice versa. Resource systems, resource users, governance systems, and resource units are some of the
framework's essential elements. Researchers can examine the interconnections within a specific social-
ecological system using these elements as analytical lenses.
               Governance Systems

Understanding how choices are made inside Pesantren institutions requires an understanding of
the governance systems component of the SES Framework (Cox et al., 2010). This part of the project
explores the institutional frameworks, regulations, and standards that direct resource management and
community involvement. Islamic values, regional customs, and modern practices may all be incorporated
into Pesantren's governance models, which in turn influence how the institutions view sustainability and
               community involvement.

               Resource Units
According to Ostrom (2009), resource units represent the goals and consequences of a social-

ecological system. Resource units in the context of Pesantren institutions may include environmental
sustainability, cultural preservation, communal well-being, and religious education (Berkes et al., 2003).
Researchers can examine the definition, prioritization, and accomplishment of these resource units inside
each institution as well as the broader implications for sustainable development by applying the SES
               Framework.

               Application to Pesantren Research
For examining the complex interactions between Pesantren institutions and their communities,
the SES Framework provides a useful perspective (Lebel et al., 2006). Researchers can investigate how
