Methodology
This study draws upon seven selected projects on landscape heritage and cultural studies in
Malaysia and Indonesia, conducted by the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Hons.) programme at the
International Islamic University Malaysia (refer to Table 1). The projects aim to introduce students to the
methodology of investigating and documenting heritage information and then to create awareness about
the heritage values of the case study area to the public by organising an exhibition. Each year, the project
involves between 20 to 50 students (depending on the number of students enrolled for the batch), and
the project site could be local or international. The project is executed through group work for eight weeks
during the short semester. Through project-based learning, students are expected to demonstrate their
knowledge of the local culture and history of the heritage landscape in the study area by producing several
deliverables: presentations, reports/books, physical or digital models, exhibitions, and any other relevant
media.

For this study, these projects are reflected and examined based on three criteria: i) instruments
that were used during the site visits and documentation phase, ii) the process of teaching and learning,
and iii) the output approach for the exhibition. The tabulation of these criteria revealed the shifts in the
teaching and learning techniques for the course over the past ten years.
