3. To propose a robust module for the “Nur” notion of illumination, drawing from Al-Ghazali’s
philosophy and the intricate relationship between light and space within traditional Malay houses,
employing installation art as a means of expression.
In essence, this study aspires to pioneer a unique approach to understanding the notion of
illumination through practice-led research. It seeks to offer a novel and dynamic framework that marries
two potent theories and philosophies: the concept of illumination, influenced by Al-Ghazali’s “Niche of
Lights,” and the intricate interplay of light and space within traditional Malay houses. Here we quote a
surah form the Quran Surat An-Nur, 24:35 that presents the concept of illumination or knowledge through
light as a form of knowledge.
2. Theoretical Framework: Al-Ghazali’s the Niche of Light
“Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The parable of His Light is a niche wherein is a lamp,
the lamp is in a glass, the glass as it were a glittering star lit from a blessed olive tree, neither Eastern
nor Western, whose oil almost lights up, though fire should not touch it. Light upon light. Allah
guides to His Light whomever He wishes. Allah draws parables for mankind and Allah has knowledge
of all things.”
(Súrat an-núr, 24:35
Al-Ghazali's work revolves around the profound idea that Allah (God) is the ultimate Light, and this
Light has significant philosophical and spiritual implications in Islamic thought. His exploration of light
encompasses three fundamental aspects related to human perception as shown in Figure 1.
