and arrangement of garden spaces is considered a crucial aspect for future reference concerning the
Islamic garden in Malaysia.
Conclusion
This study places a strong emphasis on the physical attributes of Islamic gardens, particularly with
reference to renowned garden types such as the Persian garden, the Andalusian garden, and the Mughal
garden. It also underscores the significance of implementing this concept from an Asian perspective,
specifically in Malaysia. In general, Islamic gardens have received relatively less attention from society,
largely due to the influence of the modern movement. The advent of modernization has impacted the
development of traditional gardens like the Islamic garden. According to the National Landscape
Department, the absence of clear guidelines has been a major factor hindering the adoption of this
concept in Malaysia. Additionally, limited understanding and insufficient knowledge of Islamic gardens
contribute to the current situation.
Therefore, in order to preserve the legacy of Muslim civilization, this study has been undertaken
to highlight the physical characteristics of Islamic gardens. Identifying these characteristics is deemed
crucial to promote the Islamic garden concept. The findings reveal that water and plants are the
predominant features closely associated with Islamic gardens, as they are repeatedly mentioned in the Al-
Quran. Consequently, they are considered vital physical elements of the garden concept. The study also
offers guiding principles encompassing garden elements and their arrangement in line with the Islamic
garden concept. Understanding the significance of Islamic gardens is seen as a critical step in fostering
appreciation and awareness of this concept. It is hoped that the checklist developed in this study will serve
as a valuable reference for implementing Islamic gardens in Malaysia.
