               Hang Tuah Lima Bersaudara

               CONCLUSION
Giving justice to Hang Tuah’s character costume was the ultimatum for the designer and his

assistant. Having read various hikayats and romanticising on the beauty of the costumes is nothing without
materializing it. The opportunity to design Matinya Seorang Pahlawan in 2021 opens a new door in
exploring costumes closely based on text paired with local knowledge of traditional Malay textiles and
               costumes.

In costume design, the key element is the usage of colour. Anderson. B, C (1999,136) mentions,
colour is a very powerful component of costume design; it makes the strongest initial visual impact and
registers on the audience before the other visual elements of shape or detail. Having given the colour
palette from the text, the writer had to contemplate on the right shade of red and green to put together
for the main costume pieces. Other complementary colours used for the detailing of the seluar, kain hijau
digangsi and destar was also carefully chosen to make sure, the character creates a contrast from the rest
of the cast but still stay true to the text. The richness of colour and texture of Hang Tuah’s costume too
connotes his status as Laksmana (Admiral) and how close is his acquaintance to Sultan Mansur Syah,
besides making him the focal point for his first appearance in the production. The colours chosen too, had
to compliment the set and lights that is used for the scenes involving the character.

The concept of persalinan lima ceper is a primary concept adopted for assembling Hang Tuah’s
costume. According to Sejarah Melayu and Hikayat Hang Tuah, the complete Malay man’s outfit consists
of seluar, baju sarung, kain, ikat pinggang and destar (Siti Zainon, 2009). This concept is still widely used
