in Malacca exemplifies this trend, raising questions about how marketing strategies may interfere with
tourists' authentic experiences. Scholars in tourism have also explored the concept of constructive
authenticity, where tourists experience a modified and reconstructed cultural heritage (Michal & Matylda,
2020; Cornelia, 2020; Cecilia, 2019). Furthermore, research has delved into the relationship between
pseudo-events, digital media, and travelers' experiences, particularly in the context of heritage tourism
(Nuenen and Scarles, 2021; Jyotsna & Upendra Kumar, 2019; Tao Zhang, Huijun Wen, and Xi Li, 2018).
The integration of digital media in heritage preservation and tourism has led to a complex interplay
of benefits and challenges. While digital media has undoubtedly enhanced accessibility and marketing
efforts, it has also given rise to questions about authenticity and the blurring of real and staged
experiences. As technology continues to advance, finding a delicate balance between preserving heritage
and leveraging digital media for tourism promotion remains a critical challenge for destination authorities
and stakeholders. Ultimately, the quest for authentic heritage tourism experiences in the digital age calls
for a thoughtful and strategic approach that respects the historical and cultural significance of the
destinations while embracing the opportunities presented by modern technology.
The Impact of Tourism Digitalization on Local Wisdom and Historical Identity
In an age marked by the rapid digitalization of the tourism industry, the profound impact on local
communities and historical identities cannot be overstated. This chapter delves into the intricate dynamics
of this transformation, drawing from in-depth interview data to shed light on two critical aspects. Insights
garnered from in-depth interviews with local tourism stakeholders and tourists will be shared, unveiling
their perspectives on tourism digitalization while understanding how the local community perceives and
responds to digital approaches aimed at promoting their heritage, from enthusiastic embracement to
potential resistance. As we explore the various dimensions of this impact, we will also address the
dissonance between tourists' expectations, often shaped by digital promotion, and their actual
experiences in the heritage-rich city of Malacca.
Tourists' perspectives on online reviews, guided tours, and expectations
Online Reviews: A Digital Double-Edged Sword
Online reviews play a pivotal role in shaping tourists' perceptions and decisions. The insights
obtained from the interviews with a diverse group of tourists from different countries reveal a range of
attitudes and strategies concerning online reviews. A group of Indonesian students that were on their
holiday trip to Malacca, for instance, consider online reviews to be important but exercise caution due to
potential bias. A couple from Singapore, on the other hand, find online reviews vital for their culinary
adventures but acknowledge the subjectivity of taste. Such disparities in perspectives underline the
diverse ways in which tourists utilize online reviews, relying on them as a valuable resource while being
mindful of their limitations.
Furthermore, the interviews underscore the potential discrepancies between the digital portrayal
of a destination and the reality experienced by tourists. This disparity is exemplified by the group of
travellers from Korea who were influenced by online portrayals but found the city's commercialization
disappointing. “The program host's enthusiasm had us excited to explore Malacca, but the reality can
sometimes be very different, which we experienced firsthand.” Such dissonance between digital
