Role of Technology and Smart Tourism
In the digital age, technology and smart tourism play a pivotal role in shaping the tourism
landscape. Tourism operators see smart tourism as an opportunity to offer richer experiences, improve
operational efficiency, and raise tourists' expectations for convenience, information accessibility, and
personalization. Local tour guides and trishaw riders find the move towards smart tourism daunting, as it
brings changes such as digital payments and online promotions. They express concerns about the potential
loss of traditional practices and the city's soul.
However, some stakeholders, such as the Malacca River Cruise captain, recognize the positive
impact of digital platforms on reaching a global audience, enhancing accessibility, and providing
interactivity. He stated that “the shift towards smart tourism has had a significant positive impact on our
operation. The digital ticketing system has streamlined the booking process, reducing queues, and making
it more efficient for tourists.” Digital tools, including virtual tours and convenient booking systems, enhance
the visitor experience while preserving the cultural essence. Local taxi driver acknowledges the impact of
digitalization on the industry, with tourists booking rides through smartphones as E-hailing apps have
become the preferred choice for most tourists. One of the local taxi drivers stated that he had to change
his marketing strategies to keep up with the changing times. “I've started offering set tour packages around
Malacca, highlighting popular attractions.”
Overall, the interviews shed light on the complex relationship between tourism digitalization and
the preservation of local wisdom and historical identity. While digitalization offers opportunities for
economic growth and broader exposure, it also presents challenges in maintaining authenticity and
cultural depth. Striking the right balance is crucial for ensuring that the transformation of the tourism
industry benefits both tourists and local communities. Moreover, this also highlight the importance of
adaptability and innovation in the face of digitalization as some of the local businesses are leveraging on
digital platforms to increase visibility and meet rising demand, showcasing the potential for traditional
practices and products to thrive in the digital era.
Conclusion
In an era characterized by the rapid digitalization of the tourism industry, the impact on local
communities and historical identities is undeniable. This study has provided valuable insights into the
multifaceted nature of this transformation, drawing from in-depth interviews with local tourism
stakeholders and tourists. Key findings underscore the challenges and opportunities that arise from the
digitalization, smart tourism, and promotion of heritage in a destination like Malacca.
The commodification and commercialization of cultural heritage, as revealed in the interviews, are
central to the changing landscape of tourism in Malacca. Local tourism stakeholders recognize the
economic imperative of this transformation, resulting in the reshaping of traditional practices and
landmarks into marketable products. Souvenir shops, themed restaurants, and packaged tour experiences
have become prominent fixtures in the city. However, there are concerns about the potential loss of
authenticity, as highlighted by local tour guides and trishaw riders. The challenge lies in preserving the
essence of culture while catering to tourist demands.
