Communication and Marketing
The mosque committee communicate the importance of Zakat through a number of
communication channels. The essential of Zakat and its practices have been discussed in a great
deal during Khutbah or Friday summon. This is to ensure that the villagers are aware of one of
the main pillars of Islam and encourage them to pay Zakat when the time comes. During the last
15 days of the fasting month, village wire broadcasting is done every day on this topic to remind
people on their duty and responsibility. Ramadan brochures are issued to cover activities during
the month of Ramadan, including Zakat fitr.
Some of the mosque committee highlighted that the above mentioned channels of
communication increased the number of people who pay Zakat as well as amount of Zakat each
year. Word of mouth may also contributes to this trend as the people see the effectiveness of
collection and distribution practice of the Zakat committee, they spread a good word on this.
Other people who used to pay Zakat directly to the recipients turn to the Zakat committee for
future Zakat payment. The mosque committee have employed various forms of communication
to promote Zakat in the community. However, many villagers may not have adequate practical
understanding of Zakat, especially the rich. Regular communication via printed media, radio and
social media shall be used. The involvement of the Satun Provincial Islamic Council is vital for
the success of Zakat management in this province.
Problems and solutions
Various issues related to Zakat management and practices in Baan Kota Mosque were raised
during the focus group session. The first issue is related to people’s awareness and understanding
