Abstract
Zakat institution has played an important role in social security and development in Muslim
communities in the past and continued until now. In Thailand, Zakat is practiced in Muslim
communities across the country. However, few studies have documented this practice and little
efforts have been done to establish a more systematic Zakat institution or system. This study will
explore and document the model of Zakat institution practiced in a village in Satun province in
the southern part of the country. Focus group was used to collect data from Imam, mosque
committee and other key informants. The results show that a large part of Zakat collection is
done by the mosque Zakat committee. However, some villagers pay Zakat directly to whom they
feel in need. Zakat amount collected by the mosque Zakat committee is often small while other
has gone undocumented. Zakat distribution is done once a year and the amount is often small.
Awareness on Zakat and reluctance to pay is cited as an important issue for Zakat management
in the village. It is recommended that various communication and marketing mechanisms
especially social media and radio can be used to create awareness among the people. The
provincial Islamic councils and the Central Islamic Council of Thailand should actively involve
in Zakat management process. The findings in this study should pave the way for a better Zakat
