ABSTRACT

The objectives of this research are to study (1) meaning and importance of

peace in Islam and general, (2) the policy of Fatoni University in establishing peace, and
(3) the role played by the university in peace building in the three southern border

provinces. The research is qualitative and was conducted by collecting, studying and

analyzing related data and literature materials, and using field study through interview
and questionnaire. The samples used in the research include 1) 5 interviewed selective

administrators of the university, and 2) 367 staff and students out of the total 4,502
population. The researcher used SPSS13.0 FOR WINDOWS PROGRAM to analyze the data.

The statistics applied are the percentage, average value, and standard deviation value.
The results of the research found that

1. The meaning and importance of peace in general is that all people could

live together happily and peacefully in the same community. No one afflicts, exploits,
and is suspicious to others. All uphold justice and peace. And in Islam, peace is not only

given importance for the sake of this world but also Akhirah (life after death). According

to Islam, peace was bestowed by God, Almighty, upon human beings through Prophet
Muhammad (Peace be upon him) who was the best model in maintaining life and

building peace on earth. Peace in man could be created only by inculcation of right faith,
namely belief in Allah (Glorious be to Him), His omnipresence, abiding by His

commandments, and avoiding what was prohibited by Him.
