Design concept

A design concept is necessary in a theatrical production design. It guides the designer and sets the
parameter for the designer to work on. In the case of MSP, the design concept for the costumes is strongly
based from the tradition of presenting clothes from the sultan as a prestige gift to the receiver. It is
recorded in Sulalatus Salatin:
Maka datanglah persalin; jika akan jadi Bendahara, lima ceper persalinannya; baju seceper, kain seceper,
destar seceper, sebai seceper, ikat pinggang seceper…

Based on this narrative, the writer takes it as his main design inspiration in context of the costume
ensemble for Hang Tuah. His ensemble of costume is based on the ceper (tray) system according to rank
in the palace. It is necessary to understand what clothing item is present in each ceper in order to
determine the costume pieces worn by Hang Tuah in MSP.
